A physical day of exercises, play and exploration as well as some theory on the technology and methodology of how motion and performance capture works with industry leaders and trusted performers and instructors. This is a chance to build a solid foundation for working in performance capture.

This class does not take place in a mocap studio or in mocap suits as it would only serve as a distraction and additional cost at this stage.

Spend the day learning the difference between cinematic and In-game movement creation to discovering what animators and directors want out of their performance capture talent. Explore video game scripts, the importance of improv, the world of pure imagination and more tips and tricks than you would expect in an intro class from veterans who continue to work in the performance capture world as directors, performers, producers and movement creators.

Gareth Taylor is a Cinematics Director, VO Director, 1st AD, and Movement/Creature Specialist with an impressive résumé spanning Netflix, Amazon Games, EA, Blur Studios, and more. With over 50 AAA game titles under his belt — including Until Dawn, Man of Medan, Diablo 2: Resurrected, Hitman 2, and Space Marine 2 — Gareth brings firsthand insight from both sides of the camera. Trained in performance at the prestigious Jacques Lecoq school in Paris, Gareth blends his deep understanding of movement with decades of production experience.

Paul-William Mawhinney is a creative professional with over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry. Across that time, he has worked professionally as an actor, director, voiceover artist, performance coach, video game narrative designer and performance capture 1st assistant director. A graduate of the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA, Sydney), he spent a lot of his early career focusing on acting for theatre. Since beginning his training with The Mocap Vaults he has worked on more than 30 motion capture projects. His credits in the realm of Mocap and Pcap include work in films, animations, VR, e-learning and video games, ranging from smaller independent projects all the way through to many AAA titles. Still a passionate performer, nowadays his focus is more on performance direction. Some of his notable credits of late have been as the Performance Capture Director on Fallen Leaf Studio’s 2023 Sci-fi thriller game, Fort Solis, and between 2021 - 2024 he was working with Playground Games, on their new Fable game as their Associate Performance Director. However, at present, he is the Lead Performance Director for Larian Studios.

THE MOCAP VAULTS CANCELLATION POLICY

NOTE: By Purchasing this class, you agree to our cancellation policy which states that we require a minimum of seven (7) days’ notice to qualify for a partial refund.

We will attempt to replace you in the event of a cancellation. If we can replace you, you will receive a refund minus Admin fee that amounts to 20% of your original payment for the class and PayPal has recently changed their terms and conditions and will no longer refund their transaction fee so this will be included in addition to the Admin fee. This means that you will receive the total, minus the Admin & PayPal fee, in the event of a refund.

If you cancel within Seven (7) days of the class and we cannot replace you, you will not receive a refund.

If you would like to carry over a credit for a class missed due to illness or other circumstances beyond The Mocap Vaults control, and agreed upon by the instructor, you will only be able to carry the credit over for the next following class that is offered on the date it is offered with no exceptions. After that, you will forfeit the credit and not be issued a refund.
